RumFest team launch first Rum Experience Week across London

Ian Burrell

The organisers of the UK’s annual RumFest have announced a Rum Experience Week involving bars, chefs, distillers and drinks brands.

Taking place from October 12 to 18, it will feature events across London aimed at both newcomers to rum and aficionados, from rum pairings with chocolate and cigars to cooking classes and live music gigs.

It will culminate in Boutique RumFest and The Rum Experience University on September 16 and RumFest itself on September 17 and 18, all taking place at venue ILEC in Earl’s Court.

Ian Burrell (pictured), global rum ambassador and RumFest founder, said: “Rum is an incredibly versatile spirit, whether mixed with a cocktail, paired with chocolates or marshmallows, cooking with rum, paired with cigars or simply tasted in neat form.

“This versatility is something we aim to celebrate during the first-ever Rum Experience Week allowing both old and new rum drinkers to experience rums in new and surprising ways with unique tastings, pairings and more.

“We have paired up with some incredible partners and have even more to announce soon. This will be a week of rum never to be forgotten.”

Events include a sampling of the first limited-edition batch of a single-cask expression of Lamb’s Navy Rum at Voltaire bar in Blackfriars – which will host “Alfred Lamb’s Secret Store” for the evening.

Auction house Christie’s, which last year ran a successful rum auction, will host a Rum Masters Dinner for 40 invited rum aficionados with rum distillers from around the world.

A tasting for Appleton Estate Rum will be hosted by Ian with Dave Morrison, Appleton’s senior blender who will be flying in especially from Jamaica.

On the Thursday afternoon, the “Tiki Boat” will embark for the Tiki On The Thames voyage, promising tiki vibes, tiki tunes, tiki cocktails and all things tiki followed by an after-party at Mahiki in Mayfair.

After its success last year, The Rum Experience University session will return to offer a day of education for rum lovers, leading to a recognised diploma.

The trade-only Boutique RumFest offers an opportunity to sample and meet rum brands that are new or emerging in the UK market. RumFest itself will showcase over 400 rums and feature cocktail-making competitions, seminars, workshops, a Christie’s rum auction, food and a carnival party atmosphere.

Gerry’s Wine & Spirits in Soho will be the official rum shop for Rum Experience Week featuring a “RumFest Takeover” from October 12 to 14 where customers will be able to sample a selection of the exclusive rums that will be hitting RumFest and Boutique RumFest later in the week and speak to representatives from different brands. Anyone with a RumFest ticket will be able to claim 10% off all rum purchases during Rum Experience Week.

Other highlights will include a rum supper club with critically acclaimed Trinidadian chef Shivi Ramoutar, hands-on rum cooking masterclasses with Divertimenti Cookery School, and sessions in various venues across the capital pairing rums with cigar and chocolate.
