Salvatore at Playboy celebrates 007 anniversary

Playboy Club London's Salvatore Calabrese has created the 'Double Agent' cocktail to celebrate Casino Royale's 60th anniversarySalvatore Calabrese and his team at the Playboy Club London have created a cocktail to mark the 60th anniversary of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond thriller, Casino Royale.

The Double Agent is a twist on the classic Vesper Martini, the cocktail invented by Bond in the novel. Alongside the classic ingredients of Gordon’s Gin, Russian vodka and Lillet, they have introduced fresh raspberries and a splash of tonic to emphasise the original quinine flavour of Kina Lillet, the aperitif wine that features in Bond’s original Vesper Martini and disappeared in the mid-1980s.

James Bond and the Playboy Club have a shared history, with Sean Connery placing a Playboy Club membership card in his wallet in the film Diamonds Are Forever, while actor Gloria Hendry, who played Bond girl Rosie Carver in Live and Let Die, was also a Playboy Bunny.

Salvatore famously turned down a cameo in the Casino Royale film, starring Daniel Craig, when he decided that he was not willing to shake the Martini – like most bartenders, he only stirs his Martinis as this more gentle technique creates the perfect amount of dilution. However, for the Double Agent, the addition of fresh raspberries means it needs to be shaken.

Salvatore said: “I am a Bond fan and wanted to mark one of the most iconic novels and films with a twist on Bond’s cocktail, the Vesper Martini. My unique Double Agent cocktail creates an intriguing variation on the original double agent.”
