The search has begun to find the next bartender who can create a cocktail that can stand the test of time as part of the Bacardi “legacy”.

Bacardi is calling for entries to its Legacy Cocktail Competition, now in its sixth year, which challenges bartenders in the UK and internationally to develop a modern-day classic to sit alongside the rum’s historic serves such as a Mojito and a Daiquiri.

It follows UK bartender Tom Walker from The American Bar at The Savoy in London beating competition from around the world to be named the latest Bacardi Legacy world champion (pictured).

Bartenders wishing to compete in this year’s Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition (BLCC) will need to email their cocktail recipe and inspiration to by July 31.

The structure and details of the competition have been changed for this year, with contestants able to use Bacardi Gold rum as well as Bacardi Superior in their recipes.

Ten bartenders from each region in the UK will be chosen to compete in a regional heat in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Bristol between August 17 and 27, with one winner from each heat selected for the national final.

The seven will compete in front of 200 of their industry peers in London on September 25. From this, three “most promising” bartenders will be selected to embark on a six-month campaign to promote their legacy cocktail for a chance to be named the ultimate UK winner based on their cocktail and marketing campaign.

In previous years, the three most promising bartenders waited a year before finding out the UK ultimate winner on the same night as the next year’s regional finalists came together to compete.

This year, the three bartenders from the national final will receive an exclusive invitation to the Bacardi distillery in Mexico and to visit the family archive in Miami before they embark on their six-month campaign.

The ultimate UK winner will compete against other bartenders from around the world at the global final in May 2015 and will be taken to the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans in 2015.

Shervene Shahbazkhani, Bacardi UK brand ambassador, said: “Bacardi rum has undeniably been at the forefront of cocktail culture, sustaining its legacy as the mixing spirit of choice for some of the world’s most popular and celebrated cocktails.

“This competition is a great platform for bartenders to create their very own legacy, and create a cocktail that will be recognised globally. The competition has been created for truly talented bar professionals from all types of outlet and areas around the UK, and keeps growing in popularity.

“Becoming part of the Bacardi legacy is an amazing opportunity, and the BLCC is a great chance for bartenders to become part of the Bacardi story. We are really excited to see the creativity behind the cocktails being put forward, and we would urge all those who have been working on their own Bacardi-inspired cocktail to sign up and compete in the BLCC.”
