The search has begun for the UK’s next generation of bartending talent with the launch of the 2016 Monin Cup.

Held every two years, the high-profile cocktail competition gives the industry’s brightest new stars a chance to develop and show off their skills. It challenges bartenders aged 18 to 27 to demonstrate their most innovative signature drinks made with the extensive Monin product range.

They are invited to sign up for their nearest regional heat around the UK, with events taking place in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Bristol during September. The winner and the runner-up from each heat will be invited to participate in the UK final which will take place during London Cocktail Week in October at Soho bar 68 & Boston.

The overall winner will go on to represent the UK at the Monin Cup global final in Paris on December 5, where they will compete against other bartenders from around the world for the overall title.

Entrants are required to create two signature cocktails – one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic. Recipes should include at least 10ml of Monin product for the alcoholic recipes, and at least 20ml of Monin product for the non-alcoholic recipes.

The judges will assess each competitor’s cocktail bartending skills as well as originality, presentation including glassware and garnish, flavour and creative use of Monin’s range of over 100 flavoured syrups, sauces, fruit mixes and liqueurs.

Previous finalists in the Monin Cup are bartenders who have gone on to make a mark on the UK’s bar industry including Alastair Frasier, Joe Macbeth, Andy Mil, Tom Walker, Robin Honhold, Leon Dalloway, 2012 winner William Humphrey and 2014 winner Joe Wild (pictured).

Lee Hyde, Monin beverage innovation manager, said: “The Monin Cup is a fantastic opportunity to hone your skills, share ideas and maybe even try out that experimental recipe you’ve been practising. It’s also a chance to represent your bar, your city and the UK on a global stage.

“We’re looking for talented young bartenders who can demonstrate innovation and an exceptionally high level of skill, so whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned cocktail competitor, we want to hear from you.”

The entry deadline for the Monin Cup UK is Friday August 26. For more details on the rules or to enter, click here.
