SIBA creates new beer awards for bars, pubs and restaurants

Awards for best bar or pub and best restaurant have been added to the annual Brewery Business Awards organised by the Society of Independent Brewers, SIBA.

They are part of a series of new Retail Business Award categories and also include best independent craft beer retailer and two for best independent craft beer promotion in the on- and off-trade.

The relaunched awards have two categories for best bar or pub – one for rural outlets, one for those in towns and cities.

The awards look to reward excellence in independent craft brewing across a variety of categories, from pump clip, can and bottle design to efforts taken by brewers to make their business more eco-friendly or to support their local community.

Nick Stafford, SIBA operations director, said: “The SIBA Business awards cover a wide spectrum of subjects but ultimately they are about highlighting the excellent achievements being made across the brewing industry, which has always been an innovative and open-minded industry.

“This year the awards are bigger and better than ever and we would encourage anybody involved in the brewing industry to look carefully at which categories could be relevant to them. Competition will be fierce but being named the best in your industry could be priceless.”

SIBA said the new independent craft beer categories were in response to the success of the beer market in the UK and the growing importance to recognise those businesses going the extra mile.

“The new SIBA Business Awards categories which focus on independent craft beer are unique in that they are judged by those from within the industry rather than publications or other awards bodies looking in,” Nick added.

“These are the awards which we think will fully represent the absolute best businesses in the UK selling, serving and promoting craft beer to the beer drinking public and beyond.”

There has also been a streamlining of some of the existing categories to give clearer, more rounded category options for those looking to enter. The way in which the awards are presented has been changed to give more credit to the companies involved in carrying out the work breweries are entering for. For example, the ‘Best Individual Design’ could be won jointly by the brewery who commissioned the artwork and by the design company who produced it.

The closing date for entries is February 16. Judging will take place at the BeerX festival which runs in Sheffield from March 16 to 19.
