Silent Pool releases rye vodka and cocktail ‘mists’

Silent Pool Wry Vodka

The producers of Silent Pool Gin have launched a vodka made from rye grain as well as a range of “mists” for enhancing a Martini or gin and tonic.

Wry English Vodka is made by Silent Pool Distillers using spring-fed water from the Silent Pools in the Surrey Hills where it distils its premium gin. The base is organic rye grown in Dorset and Wiltshire, supplied by Warminster Maltings, the oldest working malthouse in the UK.

Warminster still abides by the floor-malting protocols of its 19th-century antecedents whose slower, more gentle technique of processing by hand is acknowledged as giving rise to a more pronounced flavour in the finished product.

Using these full-flavoured malted rye grains, the spirit is distilled twice to bring out maximum character and taste. It is then filtered through hardwood charcoal, sourced locally from a Surrey Hills craftsman, which is fired in a traditional circular kiln.

While charcoal has been made in the Surrey Hills for at least 3,000 years, this is the first time it has been used by a distillery, fusing a unique blend of artisan skills.

Master distiller Cory Mason wanted Wry vodka to have the style of rye but with a new twist. Filtering the spirit through charcoal removes impurities and harshness while ensuring an exceptionally smooth taste with just a subtle hint of rye spice. “It has a tiny bite, which makes it more versatile and interesting to use in cocktails,” Cory said.

Silent Pool has also released three mist sprays that can be used to add aroma as a final touch to a Martini, G&T or other gin-based cocktail.

The Christmas Edition (pictured below) is distilled with the flavours of traditional mulling spices, with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg infused with hints of Christmas tree.

Bergamot Orange adds a rich and sophisticated citrusy scent, while Kaffir Lime brings a refreshing crispy zing. Each spray covers the surface of the drink in a delicate film, which is aromatic and intensely flavourful.

It is made by steeping the peel in spirit with a touch of angelica and orris root. The oils are then extracted and the remaining liquid blended with a combination of camomile and rose tea to complement gin-based recipes.

Produced with a unique blend of 24 botanicals, Silent Pool Gin is a rich and clean juniper-driven liquid with floral layers of lavender and camomile. Fresh notes of citrus and kaffir lime are grounded with the subtle sweetness of local honey.

As well as Bosnian juniper, the gin’s other botanicals are Bulgarian angelica, Italian orris, liquorice root, cassia bark, cardamom, cubeb, grain of paradise, bergamot orange peel, bitter orange peel and honey.
