Siren brews up barrel-aged porter with added tamarind

Siren Sheltered Spirit

Berkshire brewery Siren Craft Brew has added a porter aged in bourbon barrels to its range, brewed to explore the properties of tamarind.

At 14% ABV, Sheltered Spirit Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter was brewed back in 2016 for ageing in barrels. During this period, they added tamarind and a touch of chipotle chilli. Available in 330ml bottles, it is velvety smooth with deep, dark flavours.

Tamarind is an ingredient revered for the sweet and sour depth it can add to dishes and drinks and is particularly popular in the tropics.

Andy Nowlan, marketing manager at Siren, said: “In folklore, tamarind trees are said to harbour ghosts and for that reason are often found on the outskirts of villages.

“Sheltered Spirit went into our barrels at 11% and returned 14%, offering a shock of amazing fruity aromas.

“We’re not naturally superstitious, but Sheltered Spirit has serenely matured into something otherworldly during the course of its hibernation….”
