Amsterdam-based rum distillery Spirited Union is launching its first Highballer cocktail competition in March to find the next innovative expression in botanical rum.
Open to bartenders across the UK and Europe, the competition tasks entrants with creating the perfect Highball using Spirited Union’s range of botanical rums, to be submitted via social media.
The best entries will be shortlisted by the Spirited Union judging panel, with the semi-finalists moving forward to the second round, which challenges them to create a brand new botanical rum concept.
Competitors will receive a sample pack of five single origin rums and must choose one that they feel best works with their concept.
They will also be asked to present an idea to help Spirited Union further reduce its carbon footprint. The distillery already runs using solar energy, its bottle seals are plant-based and packaging is made from recycled materials.
Finalists will be announced at the end of April and invited to Spirited Union Distillery’s home in Amsterdam for a three-day final in June. Here, they will have the opportunity to distil their own rum recipe and showcase it to the judges.
The winner will go on to have their own expression launched as Spirited Union’s 2020 Limited Edition Rum.
Entries for The Highballer of the Year Twenty Twenty Competition are open between 1 and 30 March.
Last year, the distiller added a botanical agricole-style white rum called Union Lemon & Leaf Rum to its portfolio, which also includes Union Spice & Sea Salt Rum and limited edition expressions.
