Star Pubs & Bars recognises licensees in annual awards

Barrelhouse Bar & Grill in Edinburgh was among winners in the annual Star Awards for licensees working with Star Pubs & Bars.

The bar (pictured), opened by operator Caygill & Smith with Star Pubs & Bars last year, took the top award of Star Pub of the Year as well as best bar team at the gala ceremony in Manchester’s Natural History Museum last night.

Hickory’s Smokehouse at Burton Green near Coventry was given the team training award and was a finalist in four other categories. PG Taverns received the marketing award for the second time for gin destination The Jolly Botanist in Edinburgh and was a finalist in three other categories.

Other winners included Nick Livingstone’s bar 7 Saints in Prestwick in South Ayrshire (pictured below) which took the award for best social media.

Blind Tiger Inns won best live sports venue for The Talbot in Euxton, Lancashire, while Claire Hall won the “Famous for Food” award for The Spread Eagle in North Shields.

In Cumbria, Dianne Irving’s pub The White Mare in Beckermet won the “Pint Perfection” award and Tony and Michelle Grierson took the “Heart of the Community” title for The Reiver in Carlisle.

In Bristol, Graham Anderson and Sharon Stanton’s The Eastfield Inn was named most family friendly and Wickwar Wessex Pub Company’s The Jersey Lily was named best cask pub. Martyn and Lynda Cripps were named retailer of the year for The Longboat Inn in Penzance, Cornwall.

Edward O’Neill’s The Crown Inn in Farnham Royal, Buckinghamshire, won best outdoor pub while John Corbett and Natasha Gleeson’s The Rose & Crown in Heston in west London was named best newcomer.

The scores for retail standards rose 10% in Star Pubs & Bars’ portfolio in the company’s 2017 survey and the gap between the highest and lowest scoring pubs and bars was its narrowest ever. The judges noted the rise in standards across all categories and said it was harder than ever to select the winners with so many skilled operators and great pubs and bars in the estate.

Star Pubs & Bars managing director Lawson Mountstevens said: “The Star Awards is one of the high points of our year. It’s inspiring to have so much talent in one room. Like top operators in any sector, they are true entrepreneurs – always pushing the boundaries and experimenting with new ideas in order to deliver an exceptional experience to British pub goers.”
