Strong showing for UK in finalists for global Spirited Awards

Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards

The top four finalists have been announced for the international Spirited Awards at the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans, featuring many bars and bartenders from the UK.

The American Bar and the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy, Artesian at The Langham, Bar Termini, Blind Pig at Social Eating House, Callooh Callay, Dandelyan at the London Mondrian hotel, Happiness Forgets, Hawksmoor Spitalfields, The Punch Room at the London Edition, Trailer Happiness, White Lyan, and Zetter Townhouse – all in London – have made it through.

In the category of best international hotel bar, all four finalists are in London: The American Bar, the Beaufort Bar, The Punch Room and Zetter Townhouse.

Marian Beke from the Nightjar and Ryan Chetiyawardana from White Lyan and Dandelyan are in the top four for international bartender of the year alongside Zdenek Kastanek from 28 HongKong Street in Singapore and Hidetsugu Ueno of Bar High Five in Tokyo.

Familiar faces from the UK bar scene have made it to the final list for best international brand ambassador: global rum ambassador Ian Burrell, Monkey Shoulder whisky’s Dean Callan and Belvedere Vodka’s Claire Smith-Warner are in the top four alongside Becherovka’s George Nemec. Consultant and former brand ambassador Angus Winchester is a finalist for best bar mentor.

The UK is also well represented in the writing awards, including bartender Tristan Stephenson’s The Curious Bartender: An Odyssey of Malt Bourbon & Rye Whiskies, Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham’s Thinking Drinkers: The Enlightened Imbiber’s Guide to Alcohol, Dave Broom’s Whisky: The Manual, The Cocktail Lovers magazine, and cocktail and drinks website Diffordsguide. Dave, whose current projects include Scotchwhisky.com, is also up for best cocktail/spirits writer.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on July 18 as part of Tales of the Cocktail, which runs from July 13 to 19. It follows last week’s announcement of the top 10 longlist.
