Tabasco Brand is calling for professional oyster shuckers and chefs from restaurants across Britain to compete in the Tabasco Brand British Oyster Opening Championship on 11 September in Marylebone, London.
The prestigious annual event will be taking place during the 150th anniversary of TABASCO® Sauce and invites contestants to compete head-to-head for the chance to win the much-coveted championship trophy and a cash prize.
There is also the opportunity to represent Britain at the World Oyster Opening Championships in Galway, Ireland on 29 September.
Every year the competition marks the start of Britain’s native oyster season by honouring the skill and expertise involved in the craft of oyster shucking. The scored event challenges shuckers to open and present 30 native oysters as quickly and professionally as possible, before serving their platter of impeccably presented oysters to a panel of judges.
High profile restaurants and oyster bars such as Bentley’s, Scott’s, Wiltons, J Sheekey, HIX, Wright Brothers and English’s of Brighton have competed in previous years.
It is a chance to get in front of top industry professionals with the judging panel being made up of prestigious professionals from the fish and seafood industry including Chris Leftwich, former Chief Inspector of the Fishmongers Company, Mike Warner project & business development manager of The Shellfish Association of Great Britain and Mike Berthet, market development Europe for the Best Aquaculture Practice.
This year the event will also be hosted by renowned chef Brian Turner CBE.
Last year’s champion, Federico Fiorillo of Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill, impressed the judges with his speed and precision, scoring a time of three minutes 19 seconds – that’s 6.6 seconds per oyster! Fiorillo went on to compete in the World Oyster Opening Championships representing the UK, finishing in 4th place.
Fiorillo said: “Celebrating the start of the 2017 British native oyster season and being a part of the 25th annual TABASCO® Brand British Oyster Opening Championship was a huge honour!
“It was a tough competition, with the UK’s top shuckers and chefs all competing but I was absolutely delighted to win and to then go on to secure a place at the World Oyster Opening Championships.”
