The team behind London cocktail bar Discount Suit Company are to open a second site in east London which will specialise in classic mixed drinks, punches, Irish whiskey and ales.

The Umbrella Project is to launch The Sun Tavern in Bethnal Green Road in late September, which will trade from early morning to 1am – the latest licence in the area.

It is headed by Andy Kerr, formerly at bar operators The Columbo Group, All Star Lanes and Living Ventures, and Stephen Thompson and Ali Tatton, both of Mixology Events.

They opened Discount Suit Company (pictured) in January in a basement in the Petticoat Lane area in east London, specialising in creative and inventive cocktails.

The drinks list at The Sun Tavern will include a number of classic mixed drinks that have already proven popular at Discount Suit Company as well as a large selection of Irish whiskeys and poitin.

Paying homage to the “tavern” theme, the drinks menu will feature a selection of punches, with recipes dating back to the 18th century. These will be served in individual tankards or in vintage punch bowls to share.

There will also be a number of weekly changing “Local Hero” fine ales sourced from microbreweries within a two-mile radius as well as their own Sun Tavern house lager and pale ale.

Steeped in history, the site formerly known as The Sun was built in 1851 and was once a hangout of the notorious Kray twins as well as as a meeting place for the local boxing fraternity for many years.

Having experienced considerable bomb damage during World War Two, the interiors of The Sun Tavern are being stripped back to reveal its history and character.

In the morning, it will serve pastries and freshly brewed coffees from Bethnal Green’s Square Mile roastery as well as bar snacks throughout the day. With a capacity for 100, the venue will also be available for events and private hire.

The Umbrella Project was established “to offer Londoners a greater variety of venues in exciting and eclectic neighbourhoods, celebrating immaculately crafted and affordably priced classic cocktails with the emphasis always being on the quality of the product as a whole”.

They aspire to expand this concept with a further site to be announced by the end of the year.
