Tequila aged in single malt whisky casks finds UK distributor

UWA Tequila

A range of tequilas aged in former Speyside single malt whisky barrels is stepping up distribution in the UK after being taken on by leading spirits company Indie Brands.

Launched five months ago by Michael Ballantyne, UWA Tequila is a 100% agave tequila available as a blanco, reposado and añejo.

He said: “What started as a project ageing tequila in single malt casks really was just something I wanted to do to get my friends’ minds past the shooting tequila culture and into viewing it as you would drinking a single malt.

“We’re delighted that after five months of launching the brand in the UK, sales have really exceeded our expectations.

“With distributors calling from other regions in the world, we needed to find a more concrete distribution in place so we can focus on our global branding for UWA. Knowing the kind of brands Indie has brought to the UK, we are honoured to be a part of their agave portfolio.”

Indie Brands already looks after brands such as Arette and Fortaleza tequilas, Nuestra Soledad and Gem & Bolt mezcals, Lejay liqueurs, Arran Malt, Ban Poitin, Matusalem rum, Xanté pear liqueur and Cariel and Koskenkorva vodkas.

Mike Beavan, sales and marketing director of Indie Brands, said: “Tequila has always been a bartender favourite and this has driven volume. However, with the move away from a shot as the standard serve, there is more buy-in to the category at the consumer level.

“UWA represents something truly unique in the market. By combining two beautiful countries and their iconic national drinks, UWA will appeal to a wider audience of consumers and encourage further exploration in the world of tequila.”
