While the drinks industry can offer an incredible career path, there is an acute lack of diversity behind the bar, in front of house positions and management roles. The lack of representation is without doubt a contributing factor that can on occasion make cocktail bars often feel exclusively white middle class spaces. The long term partnership of Equal Measures and The Mixing Class on this project was formed with a strong determination & ambition to help create warm, welcoming cocktail bar environments that mirror our wonderfully diverse society in the UK.
The Equal Measures Education and Mentorship Project aims to offer underrepresented minorities the opportunity to gild their CV with relevant qualifications, to meet people who can inspire their career path, and also to challenge the biases of existing hiring practices in the hospitality industry.
The Equal Measures Education & Mentorship Project is a long term project and will be a driving force for positive change, providing bartenders/front of house staff the opportunity to grow and progress, and hopefully with time give diversity to the faces of not only those behind the bar, but also those who rise into elite positions within global organisations.
Deano Moncrieffe, founder of Equal Measures states “I am incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to help drive positive change in our industry through this long-term partnership with The Mixing Class. We are determined to help those who have had to face unfair barriers due to either the colour of their skin or lack of financial resources to further themselves and unlock their full potential. This is not a one-off, we will do this until we really do start to see an industry that is more reflective of society and true progression means everyone must play a part.”
With Hannah Lanfear, Founding Director of The Mixing Class adding “A key tenet of The Mixing Class is our belief that education should be used for the power of good. We are delighted to be working with Equal Measures to strive for greater diversity within hospitality, and to ensure a brilliant career in this fantastic industry is within the reach of all who dream of it.”
