Robyn Wilkie (pictured), a New Yorker now working in London bars, has been announced as winner of the first cocktail competition run for Ting, the sparkling grapefruit crush drink.

She beat off stiff competition from four other finalists in a series of challenges to claim the title of Ting’s Mixologist Awards Champion.

She won over the judges with her faultlessly balanced drinks, calm presentation and engaging smile. Her cocktail, called “some tings gotta give”, combined grapefruit vodka, Aperol and Yellow Chartreuse with lime juice, sugar syrup, egg white and Ting.

Robyn, who works at The Library in London, won £1,000 and saw her recipe added to the menu at Mahiki, where the final was held, as the bar’s cocktail of the month.

The Ting Mixologist Awards were launched this summer in partnership with Mahiki and cocktail specialist Diffordsguide.com, inviting bartenders and “enthusiastic mixologists” to create a new and original cocktail, with the only rule being it must contain Ting.

Fans of Ting’s Facebook page were encouraged to vote for their favourite recipe, with the top five invited to the grand final.

Reinforcing Ting’s versatility as a mixer, the finalists faced a series of cocktail challenges to determine whether they would get through to the following rounds, with each round judged by a panel of experts including Justin Paget, who looks after the on-trade and foodservice at Ting distributor Cott Beverages, and Mahiki bar manager Georgi Radev.

Robyn said: “ Coincidentally when I heard about the Ting Mixologist Awards, I had already been working on a cocktail recipe using Ting so I tweaked that and played around with the formula to find ingredients that really complemented Ting’s taste.

“Winning the competition was a huge surprise for me and I’m so proud to be the first winner. I hope to use this to grow my experience within cocktail making and create more unique recipes.”

Justin added: “This has been an extremely exciting time for Ting as it gave us the opportunity to discover some of the new bartending talent the UK has to offer as well as showcasing how versatile Ting is as a mixer.

“By launching the Ting Mixologist Awards, we’ve really made our mark on the mixer category and demonstrated the potential Ting has as a serve.

“We know Ting goes well with all types of spirits, but we need to get this message out there, so by encouraging professionals to experiment with Ting and create a new cocktail recipe, this has been a fantastic way of showcasing just how flexible it is.”
