Top 50 in north’s bar, pub, restaurant and hotel sector announced

The top 50 people running the north’s bars, pubs, restaurants and hotels have been named at the Northern Restaurant & Bar show in Manchester.

The NRB Top 50 power list includes the bosses of larger multiple operators such as Tim Bacon (pictured left) and Jeremy Roberts of Living Ventures, Martin Wolstencroft (pictured right) and Chris Ure of Arc Inspirations, and Mark McQuater and Jimmy Del Giudice of Revolution Bars Group.

Other multiple operators on the list include Marie Carter and Beau Myers of Beautiful Drinks, Mal Evans of Mojo bars, Cleo Farman of Odd Bar group, Ged Feltham of bar group Leelex, Si Ord of Sandanista, Joel Wilkinson of Trof, James Hitchen and Karina Jadhav of Neighbourhood and Southern 11, and Jobe Ferguson and Ross McKenzie of Black Dog Ballroom bars and The Liars Club Group.

Also on the power list are bartender Lyndon Higginson, co-director of The Liars Club Group, and up-and-coming operators such as James Douglas and Scott Munro of Reds True BBQ.

Entering the NRB Top 50 are Roy Ellis and Neil Macleod, the original founders of Revolution bars who are now developing Flying Pig & Lobster with chef patron Simon Rimmer. David Mooney and Paul Newman also make the list with their expanding gastropub group New Moon Co.

The NRB Top 50 2015 was announced yesterday at Northern Restaurant & Bar at Manchester Central, where it was revealed that 90% of those on the list were planning more launches and expansion in the region.

It is run in association with Kuits licensing solicitors with supporters The Russell Partnership and sponsors BDO and Tushingham Moore Leisure. They formed part of the panel of judges working in hospitality finance, property, law and consultancy in the north.

There were three special award winners: William Lees Jones, managing director of Manchester brewer and pub operator JW Lees, Jonathan Slater, who is retiring as managing director of the Chester Grosvenor after more than 30 years, and Nigel Haworth and Craig Bancroft, owners of restaurant Northcote in Langho, near Blackburn, and Ribble Valley Inns.

Thom Hetherington, chief executive of organisers Holden Media, said: “We received a record number of entrants to the NRB Top 50 this year, making judging an incredibly difficult process.

“The north seems to be flavour of the month amongst national and international operators at the moment, but we feel it is fundamentally important that we recognise those home-grown operators who are achieving huge levels of critical acclaim and commercial success and driving employment, training and investment in the region.”
