Top bars and bartenders named in Scottish awards

Edinburgh’s Panda & Sons and its bartender Michael Braun were among winners in the annual Scottish Bartenders Network Awards.

Panda & Sons, which was opened at the end of last year by bartender Iain McPherson, was named best new bar for having the biggest impact on Scotland’s bar scene and being “a treasure to the industry”. The category was sponsored by Pickering’s Gin.

Michael was named bartender of the year in a category seeking a bartender who is at the top of their game and is an asset to Scotland’s drinks industry. He is pictured above with David Relph of distributor 10 Degrees C, whose Mezcal Marca Negra sponsored the category.

The award for Scotland’s best cocktail bar, sponsored by Martin Miller’s Gin, went to Tonic in Edinburgh, recognised for excelling in “creating great drinks in a consistently great atmosphere”. G&V Hotel in Edinburgh was named hotel bar of the year, sponsored by Drambuie.

Best cocktail list went to Guy’s Restaurant & Bar in Glasgow in recognition of a well-thought-out and well presented menu delivered in top- class fashion. The category was sponsored by Diplomático Rum.

The award for bar manager of the year went to award-winning bartender Simon Smith of The George Hotel in Inverary, Argyll. The category was sponsored by Darnley’s Spiced Gin.

Robert Webb of Gusto in Edinburgh was named young bartender of the year, sponsored by Ron Cubay rum, which sought bartenders aged 23 and under who are making an impact in the industry.

The Beer Champion Award, sponsored by Solid Liquids, was awarded to Joe Dick of The Hanging Bat in Edinburgh, one of the UK’s best bars for craft beers.

“The Legend” Award, sponsored by Jim Beam, went to Andy Gemmell of consultancy The Drink Cabinet, who has been involved with some of Scotland’s best bars and working with leading drinks brands.

An award for best dressed bartender, sponsored by Campari, was won by the “consistently best dressed” Matthew Wakeford of G&V Hotel in Edinburgh.

The awards were held at Clouds & Soil in Edinburgh and were based on over 300 nominations from people in the industry.
