William Grant & Sons-owned Irish whiskey brand Tullamore Dew has launched an XO expression finished in Caribbean rum casks to the UK.
Tully XO has been created to take drinkers on a journey from Ireland to the Caribbean, highlighting the role the Irish emigrants of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries played in the early development of rum in the West Indies.
To produce the expression, Tullamore’s original triple distilled, triple blend, triple wood matured Irish whiskey is finished in first fill XO Caribbean rum casks to provide a “smoothly satisfying flavour with layers of sweetness and exotic, tropical notes”.
On the nose, the whiskey is said to have notes of vanilla and oak overlaid with citrus, ripe bananas and delicate spice. The mouthfeel “brings out deep caramel and banana notes with dates and raisins evident” and the finish is “long and sweet with bananas and caramel lingering”.
Tully XO is suggested served in an XO Daiquiri, a twist on a classic rum cocktail, combining Tully XO, fresh lime juice and sugar syrup, with a lime wheel garnish.
The whiskey’s packaging is inspired by antique Caribbean trade maps, passport stamps and travel journals.
John Quinn, global brand ambassador for Tullamore Dew, said: “At our Tullamore Distillery, we are constantly experimenting with our whiskey making.
“Tullamore Dew XO Caribbean Rum Cask Finish was just one of many trials inspired by our work on the Beauty of Blend, but immediately stood out to our whiskey makers as being something truly special.
“Many styles of Caribbean rum were tested, but carefully selected first fill XO Caribbean rum casks, previously used to age Demerara rum, imparted distinctive sweet tropical fruit and warm spice flavours to our original blend. The combination of Irish heart and Caribbean soul balance beautifully.”
