UK bars and bartenders reach final for global awards

Bars and bartenders from Edinburgh and London have made it through to the list of top four finalists in the global Spirited Awards.

After last month’s shortlist was sifted down from 10 to four, the UK continues to figure strongly in the annual awards held as part of the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans in July.

Three of the four finalists competing for best international hotel bar are in London: the Artesian Bar at the Langham (pictured), the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy and the Connaught Bar at The Connaught. Their competition is Black Angel’s Bar in Prague.

The Connaught Bar is also up for world’s best drinks selection, battling it out with The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog in New York, Multnomah Whisk{e}y Library in Portland, Oregon, and Tommy’s in San Francisco.

Three of the four finalists in another category, best new international cocktail bar, are in London: Blind Pig at Social Eating House, NOLA Bar and White Lyan. They take on Hello Sailor in Sydney.

Blind Pig is also one of the three bars from the UK in the final for best international restaurant bar, along with The Bon Vivant in Edinburgh and Hawksmoor’s Spitalfields Bar in London. They are up against Delicatessen in Moscow.

Another Edinburgh bar, Bramble, is the only UK bar to make it onto the finalists’ list for best international cocktail bar. It faces competition from 28 HongKong Street in Singapore, Candelaria in Paris and Door 74 in Amsterdam.

The American Bar at The Savoy and the Artesian Bar at London’s Langham hotel are competing in the new category of best international bar team, up against 28 HongKong Street and The Black Pearl in Melbourne.

The two London hotel bars also feature in the finalists for international bartender of the year: Simone Caporale from the Artesian Bar and Tom Walker from the American Bar. They are up against Zdenek Kastanek from 28 HongKong Street, previously at Quo Vadis in London, and Hidetsugu Ueno of Bar High Five in Tokyo.

The Nightjar, home to bar manager Marian Beke, is a finalist for world’s best cocktail menu alongside The Aviary in Chicago, Pouring Ribbons in New York and Trick Dog in San Francisco.

In the category of best international high-volume cocktail bar, London Cocktail Club has made the finalists’ list alongside The Black Pearl, Eau De Vie Melbourne and Schumann’s in Munich.

One of the finalists for best new cocktail and bartending book is The Curious Bartender by bartender Tristan Stephenson, a director of UK-based consultancy Fluid Movement and London bar The Worship Street Whistling Shop.

British mixologists also made it into the final list for brand ambassador awards. The title of best international brand ambassador features David Piper from Hendrick’s Gin and Claire Smith from Belvedere Vodka who are up against two faces familiar to the UK bar trade: David Cordoba from Bacardi and Giuseppe Gallo from Martini. Tanqueray global brand ambassador Angus Winchester is up for best American brand ambassador.

The organisers of Tales of the Cocktail said the finalists were selected from the largest nomination pool in the history of the show.

The winners of the eighth annual Spirited Awards will be announced on July 19 at the Sheraton New Orleans.
