UK bars triumph in international Spirited Awards

British bars won nearly all the international titles in this year’s Spirited Awards run as part of the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans.

All in London, winners in the international and global categories included The American Bar at The Savoy, Callooh Callay, Hawksmoor Spitalfields, Happiness Forgets, Oriole, Dandelyan and The Connaught Bar (pictured) which was named the world’s best cocktail bar.

Other winners included bar and cocktail specialist Angus Winchester, Chivas Regal global brand ambassador Max Warner, Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple rum, international bartending magazine The Cocktail Lovers and Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry for the book about their Manhattan bar, The Dead Rabbit Drinks Manual: Secret Recipes and Barroom Tales from Two Belfast Boys Who Conquered the Cocktail World. All the winners of the 10th annual Spirited Awards were announced last night at the Sheraton Hotel New Orleans. Winners were voted on by a panel of more than 100 industry experts led by chairman Simon Ford plus Jackson Cannon, Jacob Briars and David Wondrich.

The winner of the world’s best bar award was determined by the most total votes for both American and international finalists in the categories of high-volume cocktail bar, hotel bar, restaurant bar, cocktail bar and cocktail menu.

The late Sasha Petraske, a leading New York City bar owner who inspired many around the world, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award which was accepted on his behalf by his wife, Georgette Moger-Petraske.

It was the last year as chairman for Simon Ford who is stepping down to be replaced by Charlotte Voisey, director of brand advocacy for William Grant & Sons USA.
