Following a successful on-trade launch in Scandinavia, premium non-alcoholic ‘spirit’ brand Gnista has made its way to the UK market.

Produced in small batches in Skåne, Sweden, Gnista champions modern gastronomy, food technology and classic spirit making techniques, where distillation, brewing and barrel ageing are central.

The brand’s first expression, Floral Wormwood, is “aromatic and fresh on the nose, with bitter tones of wormwood and green herbs, hint of orange peel and a floral finish”.

The liquid has been developed to use as an alternative base for cocktails, but can also be enjoyed over ice with tonic or soda as an aperitif-style drink.

Erika Ollén, co-founder of Gnista Spirits and previous founder of chili drink Caliente, said: “With our experience from the industry, we’ve seen how non-alcoholic alternatives have followed similar patterns as the vegetarian movement; today it’s no longer seen as uncool to actively opt out of alcohol at the party, but rather the opposite.

“At the same time, people are tired of settling with children’s soda or tap water when the rest are sipping G&Ts.

“With ‘impossible is nothing’ as a starting point, we decided to produce a solid non-alcoholic spirit that imitates the ‘difficulty’ you’re used to from ordinary liquor, which is something that nobody has succeeded with before.”

The team at Gnista Spirits have plans to release a second variant in January, 2020.
