UK launch for limited-edition Swedish oak-aged gin

Strane Oaked Gin

Swedish distiller Smögen Whisky AB has released its limited-edition Strane Oaked Gin, matured in an ex-sherry butt, in the UK.

Based on Strane London Dry Navy Strength Gin, Strane Oaked Gin has been matured for 18 months in a former sherry butt that also previously matured heavily peated Smögen Whisky.

Bottled at 55% ABV, it is a fragrant sipping gin, with flavour and structure from the sherry cask. For a long serve, its distiller Pär Caldenby suggests replacing whisky with Strane Oaked Gin in a whisky and soda.

Robert Ransom from UK importer Highfern said: “Strane Oaked Gin offers an astonishing crossover between gin, whisky and sherry, which will delight fans of craft spirits.”

Strane Gin is distilled in a 100-litre copper pot still with worm tub condensers at the Smögen Distillery, one of the first distilleries in Sweden to produce single malt whisky. It is created by distilling three differently balanced base gins – junipery, citrusy and herbal but with the same 12 botanicals – which are then blended.

To date, Strane is perhaps best known for Strane “Uncut” which, at 76% ABV, is the strongest gin available in the UK.
