UK release for Ron Zacapa using rum aged in a herb garden

A new limited-edition blend is to be launched in the UK for ultra-premium rum Ron Zacapa, matured in barrels in a herb garden high above the clouds.

Reserva Limitada 2014 is the second in an annual series of vintage limited editions with a different blend of rums selected by master blender Lorena Vasquez.

It is made up of reserve rums that have been aged for between six and 24 years in barrels of white oak and French oak, providing a complex, 45% ABV blend with incredible smoothness and an intense mahogany colour.

Barrels of rum are slow-aged for two years in a herb garden created at the distillery’s warehouse site in the Guatemalan mountains. More than 20 different herbs such as fennel, coriander, anise and tarragon are grown there, subtly scenting the air and infusing the rum.

It is inspired by traditional rituals of the Mayans, who lived in the region and used aromatic herbs in cooking and religion.

Nick Temperley, head of Diageo Reserve Brands GB, said: “The launch of Reserva Limitada 2014 brings another exciting and innovative, limited-edition liquid to the Zacapa range, and demonstrates the commitment our master blender Lorena Vasquez has to both the product and the rum category.

“Ron Zacapa competes with the finest whiskies and cognacs thanks to its unique complexities, and the launch of Reserva Limitada 2014 provides an incomparable, unique liquid that is much anticipated by rum connoisseurs.

“Furthermore, Reserva Limitada 2014 delivers a great opportunity for customers to trade up, particularly due to its exclusive availability, with just 642 bottles available in the UK.”

It will be available at selected bars including Artesian at London’s Langham hotel and Oblix at The Shard at London Bridge. A small allocation will also be available at off-trade stockists including Gerry’s Wines & Spirits and The Whisky Exchange at an expected recommended retail price of about £82 for a 70cl bottle.

Like all Zacapa rums, Reserva Limitada 2014 is made from the sugar canes of the Guatemalan lowlands, with an ageing process that takes place above the clouds at 2,300 metres above sea level. Traditional hand-woven petate bands adorn each bottle.

According to the tasting notes for Ron Zacapa Reserva Limitada 2014, the rum is full-bodied and round, with thick and delicate legs on the glass.

On the nose, it is intense and broad and has a sophisticated range of aromas, with each moist and fresh herb note being perfectly balanced in harmonious subtlety. Delicate and distinctive aromas allow the hints of mint, peppermint, oregano and bay leaf to shine through.

On the palate, it is exotic, structured and complex, with the subtlety of different herbs complementing the balance of Zacapa with notes of melted caramel, cinnamon and raisins, as well as subtle tones of toasted wood and vanilla. The finish is described as persistent, exceptionally soft and sophisticated with hints of fresh herbs.
