Lucia Montanelli from The Dorchester in London is off to Normandy to take part in the European finals of a competition to encourage bartenders to use calvados in cocktails.

Lucia (pictured centre) won the UK heat of the Calvados Nouvelle Vogue competition, organised by the United Kingdom Bartenders Guild and sponsored by calvados producers Dupont, Adrien Camut and Berneroy.

Featuring bartenders from London and the south of England, it was held at the Hotel du Vin in Winchester, Hampshire, and challenged competitors to create a drink using L Dupont VSOP, Adrien Camut 6 Ans or Berneroy Fine calvados.

They were asked to find inspiration from famous movies shot in Normandy including The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Coco Before Chanel. They also had to use a typical product from their own town or region.

Lucia – pictured below – won with a cocktail called Je Suis 13, mixing Calvados Dupont with a homemade cinnamon and orange syrup and Amaro Chinato, with a garnish of rosemary, salt, orange and cinnamon. See below for the full recipe.

She will represent the UK at the European final at the Amirauté hotel in Deauville on March 29.

In second place was Federico Pavan from Salvatore’s Bar at Playboy Club London in Mayfair, with Thomas Quay from The Captain’s Club in Christchurch, Dorset, in third place.

In fourth place was Sandro Lyhs from Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor Bar in London. The top student in the competition was Amelia Povey.

The judges were Peter Holland from the Floating Rum Shack, Mark Smalley from Tiger Milk bar in Plymouth, UKBG vice president Mike Sweetman, Armand Fasola from the UKBG, UKBG 2014 national cocktail competition champion Majiec Ubarnsky, and Bruce Perry, sales director at calvados specialist Eaux de Vie.
