Bartenders have been selected from the south and London to take part in the national final of the UK Bartenders Guild National Cocktail Challenge.

The southern heat was won by Tommy Quy (pictured below) from Captains Club Hotel in Christchurch, Dorset, with a cocktail called Southern Hospitality: a mix of Somerset cider, De Kuyper Apricot Brandy, lemon juice, chocolate bitters and apricot Naked Jam. The drink was served in a coupette and garnished with a sugar rim and citrus twist.

He will compete in the UK final in London on October 20 along with the five other top-scoring bartenders in the heat: Marco Brivio from the George & Dragon in Tunbridge Wells; Salvatore Maggio from the Westbury Hotel in London; Orlando Garcia from The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa in Bath; Michael Ragoos from The Ivy Market Grill in London; and Elin Ersin from 1812 Lounge Bar & Restaurant in Bournemouth (pictured).

The competition, sponsored by liqueur brand De Kuyper, is seeking an overall UK champion who will win an all-expenses-paid five-day trip to Tokyo to represent the UK in the 2016 International Bartenders Association world final.

Contenders in the regional heats are challenged to make a twist on a classic Crusta, featuring at least 20ml from the De Kuyper liqueur range. Each drink has to be presented and served to four people within seven minutes and is judged on appearance, aroma and taste.

Salvatore Damiano, UK Bartenders Guild South chairman, said: “Once again it’s been a great day, full of high-quality, creative bartending skills. Thank you to our judges, and to all our mixologists who journeyed from across the south to compete. Huge congratulations to Tommy, who was truly outstanding.”

Paul Curry, De Kuyper brand manager, added: “It’s always a pleasure to be involved in the UKBG National Cocktail Challenge, which proves to be a brilliant contest year after year. De Kuyper’s range of liqueurs make fantastic cocktail ingredients, and as such we were expecting some really exciting concoctions – we weren’t disappointed!”

A report from the London heat will be published shortly.
