UK’s bars and bartenders finalists in global awards

Tales of the Cocktail

Britain’s bars and bartenders have again been recognised as among the best in the world by being named finalists in the global Spirited Awards.

Edinburgh bars Bramble and The Bon Vivant join a line-up of London bars that are up for the eighth annual awards from the organisers of the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans.

Finalists in London include Big Easy Covent Garden, London Cocktail Club, the Red Bar at Bam-Bou, The Gilbert Scott at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Spitalfields Bar at Hawksmoor, Hix Soho, Oblix, Blind Pig, NOLA Bar, White Lyan and the Nightjar.

The category for world’s best hotel bar features several in London: the Artesian at the Langham, the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy, the Connaught Bar at the Connaught Hotel, The Punch Room at The London Edition hotel and Scarfe’s Bar at Rosewood London.

Bartenders from London bars feature heavily as finalists for best international bartender: Marian Beke from the Nightjar, Monica Berg from Pollen Street Social, Simone Caporale from the Artesian, Ryan Chetiyawardana from White Lyan and Tom Walker from The American Bar at The Savoy.

The American Bar, the Nightjar, the Connaught Bar, Blind Pig and the Artesian are also up for an award in the new category of best international bar team.

Finalists for best mentor include Wayne Collins of Maxxium’s training arm, Mixxit, while Tristan Stephenson of consultancy Fluid Movement and The Worship Street Whistling Shop in London is a finalist for best new cocktail/bartending book with The Curious Bartender.

Britons are also finalists for brand ambassador awards including Diageo Reserve’s Tim Etherington Judge, David Piper of Hendrick’s Gin, Claire Smith of Belvedere Vodka, Max Warner of Chivas Regal whisky, Jamie Evans of Oxley Gin, Freddy May of Glenfiddich whisky, Angus Winchester of Tanqueray Gin and rum ambassador Ian Burrell.

Nominees for the award for best new product include Burrough’s Reserve Gin from Beefeater, Martini Gran Lusso vermouth, Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, Plantation Original Dark Rum and Sipsmith VJOP Gin.

Last year, no bars or bartenders from the UK won awards despite a strong presence in the finalists’ list although Salvatore Calabrese of Salvatore’s Bar at Playboy Club, London, won the Helen David Award for Lifetime Achievement. Click here for a report on the 2013 Spirited Awards.

This year’s finalists, announced today, were chosen by American and international judging committees made up of some of the most respected figures in the cocktail world. The top four finalists will be announced on June 6.

The winners will be revealed at the Spirited Awards ceremony at the Sheraton New Orleans on July 19 as part of the Tales of the Cocktail festival. Sponsors include 86 Company, American Harvest, Angostura, Bacardi USA, Beverage Media, Nicolas Feuillatte, Pernod Ricard USA, Pierre Ferrand and William Grant & Sons.
