Underneath the arches: Ossett Brewery opens Archie’s in Leeds

Ossett Brewery in West Yorkshire has opened its third venue in Leeds city centre

Arches beneath Leeds railway station have been transformed into the third bar for Ossett Brewery in Leeds city centre. Archie’s Bar & Kitchen has opened within the so-called “Dark Arches” of Granary Wharf, close to the brewery’s venue Candlebar which opened in April.

Archie’s is a stylish, comfortable venue stretching across two arches, with an equal focus on fresh food and good-quality drinks. Open all day, it offers eat-in and take-out breakfast, weekend brunch and all-day dinner options. The bar stocks a strong range of spirits and beers – including Ossett Brewery’s own beers – alongside cocktails, premium coffee and fresh juices.

Like Candlebar, Archie’s has been developed with leading hospitality design practice Fusion by Design. It features a creative mixture of materials including reclaimed wood, steel mesh, ceramics and natural stones, giving it an urban vibe. Vibrant washes of colour are splashed around the venue with finishing touches that include eye-catching funfair mirrors, a sailing boat, deck chairs and a full-size 1974 VW campervan, all evoking memories of childhood day trips to the British seaside.

Small plates include chicken wings with honey, five spice and lavender, salt beef croquettes with spicy mayonnaise, and lamb shoulder with smoked aubergine, while larger dishes feature classics such as fish and chips, Barnsley chop and Arnold Bennett omelette. For breakfast or brunch, the choice includes buttermilk pancakes with banana, caramel sauce and mascarpone, or simply a classic Archie’s All Day Fry.

The bar and kitchen are open from 8am during the week and from 9am at weekends. In the daytime, it is a laid-back hangout with a casual and relaxed vibe where people can drop in, play the jukebox, read the newspaper, hold a business breakfast, meet a friend for lunch, or simply watch the world go by while waiting for a train. At night, it becomes a more lively after-work destination, while Fridays and Saturdays see it become a party venue, open till 1am, with a dance floor open from 9pm, playing current hits and classic disco with a resident DJ under a rotating glitter ball.

Along with opening The Hop nearby, Ossett Brewery has now invested over £1m in the Granary Wharf retail and leisure complex which will become even more accessible when the Leeds Station South Exit opens later this year.

Jamie Lawson, director of the West Yorkshire brewery, said: “Granary Wharf is already such an exciting location and features some of the best hotels, bars and restaurants in Leeds. Archie’s Bar & Kitchen is the final piece of the jigsaw within this vibrant area of the city, bringing a casual all-day dining experience with a great place to get your ‘disco groove’ on at the weekend.”
