US triumphs in 42Below Cocktail World Cup

A team of UK bartenders took third place in the global final of this year’s 42Below Cocktail World Cup in New Zealand, beaten by the USA in first place and New Zealand in second.

Team UK was made up of Terry Cashman of The Hoxton Pony and Simon Toohey of Callooh Callay – both in Shoreditch, east London – and Max Venning of The Violet Hour in West Didsbury, south Manchester. Their cocktail (pictured above) combined 42Below Feijoa, poppy liqueur, lemon juice and spiced dry cider, served in a chilled medicine bottle on a bed of straw.

First place in the competition went to Team USA: Beckaly Franks from Clyde Common in Portland, Oregon; Steve Schneider from Employees Only and Macao Trading Company, New York City; and Ken Kodys from Breckenridge Brewery, Denver, Colorado.

Team USA were praised for not only creating a perfectly balanced and well executed drink but delivering a highly choreographed stage show at the final in Auckland. In keeping with the event’s theme of “Lab Experiment”, their performance was inspired by American comic, The Incredible Hulk, the ultimate scientific experiment gone wrong.

The judges included New Zealander Jacob Briars and Tony Conigliaro of 69 Colebrooke Row and Zetter Townhouse in London.

The World Cup saw 21 of the world’s best bartenders spend three days in Queenstown, throwing themselves from cable cars, flying in helicopters, riding the Shotover Jet, competing in terrifying challenges and listening to seminars from some of the industry’s most influential tastemakers.

Other teams included “wild card” winners Team Scotland, which comprised Jamie MacDonald of The Raconteur in Edinburgh, Danil Nevsky of Society in Aberdeen and Megan DeMeulenaere of Bramble in Edinburgh. There was also a Startenders Team made up of three of the world’s leading mixologists including JJ Goodman from London Cocktail Club in the UK alongside Danielle Dalla Polla of Italy and Michael Callahan from the US.
