Samuel Treadway of Backbar Union in Boston, USA has been named the 2019 winner of Giffard’s international cocktail competition, the Giffard West Cup.
The 21st edition of the West Cup brought together 17 bartenders from across the world for a two-day competition, held at Château d’Angers, a thirteenth-century medieval fortress in France.
Each country organised its own pre-selections to pick the champion who would represent them at the grand international final.
The candidates first gathered on the Giffard stand at the Cocktail Spirits Fair for a special series of guest shifts, before heading to Angers.
Over the two days, the contestants faced two rounds. The first, ‘Less is more’, challenged bartenders to create a minimalist cocktail, showcasing Giffard liqueurs in a creation composed of only two main ingredients.
For the second challenge ‘Born to refresh’, a nod to the story of Menthe-Pastille, the objective was to create a refreshing long drink using Giffard’s iconic liqueur.
Following the two days, one winner was chosen by an international jury made up of: Simon Difford, creator of Difford’s Guide; Yana Volfson, beverage director for Cosme and Atla in New York; David Hans, winner of the Giffard West Cup in 2017; Jen Riley, owner of Red House and Sister Midnight in Paris; and Bruno and Edith Giffard.
Samuel impressed the judges with his B² and Sailor’s Apothecary cocktails (recipes below), and was crowned the winner of the competition.
Matteo Mosetti of Nocturnal Animals in Birmingham, UK came in second place, followed by Sebastian Bauer of Gelbes Haus in Nürnberg, Germany, in third.
