Victory for Edinburgh bartender in Rum Frontiers competition

Flor De Cana Rum Frontiers 2018

Lachlan Rooney from the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh was crowned the winner of Flor de Caña’s 2018 Rum Frontiers competition.

Held at the Voodoo Rooms, nine finalists completed an exciting evening of elimination rounds where everything from their speed, mixing and presentation was put to the test for a chance to win a once in a lifetime trip to Costa Rica.

Lachlan’s show stopping serve for the final round was made with homemade marmalade, champagne and Flor de Caña 18 Year Old. His winning drink was inspired by Don Francisco Alfredo Pellas Canessa, the first member of Flor de Caña’s history and was aptly named, The Family Tree.

The annual Flor de Caña Rum Frontiers competition first challenged the UK’s mixologists in the competition heats to create a cocktail using Flor de Caña 7 Year Old Gran Reserva rum that is inspired by the “spirit and culture of Nicaragua”.

Flor de Caña’s UK brand ambassador Mateo Ortiz Lima, Marc Catalan, Flor de Caña’s area manager for Europe, and global rum ambassador Ian Burrell judged this year’s competition.

Lachlan said: “I was up against some really strong competition and was shocked and surprised to have won this years’ Rum Frontiers challenge. I put in a lot of time and effort to think up the story, ingredients and even the garnish of The Family Tree and I’m so glad it paid off.

“It was a long and hard going day with many of the rounds putting my skills and knowledge to the test. Entering the competition was nerve-wracking but it was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to go on the trip and continue on this journey learning more about Flor de Caña.”

Mateo said: “The level of skill and competition at this years’ Rum Frontiers challenge was really exceptional and everyone should feel very proud to have made it so far. We love to see the innovative, creative and tasty ways the contenders use Flor de Caña in their drinks and we hope they continue to do so in their work.

“Lachlan was a standout winner and we wish him all the best with the future and we’re sure he will enjoy the trip to Costa Rica.”
