VIDEO: Sidecar by Merlet European final

Distillerie Merlet & Fils has released a short film about the European final of its third annual Sidecar by Merlet competition which took place on January 16.

With Andrew Loudon from 69 Colebrooke Row in London representing the UK, the competition was held in restaurant La Mélangerie in Saint Sauvant, near Cognac in south-west France, where the liqueurs and cognac are made.

The judging panel was chaired by Tony Conigliaro of 69 Colebrooke Row and made up of Luc Merlet, who is in charge of sales and marketing at Distillerie Merlet & Fils, journalist Jean-Charles Chapuzet of Terres de Vins, and bartender Yoann Vantorhoudt, spirit specialist at La Maison du Whisky.

The other finalists were Jérémy Auger from France, Anton Roeder from Germany, Jorge Serrano from Spain and Jonas Brandenborg Andersen from Denmark, who was named the winner.

The competition challenges bartenders to come up with a twist on a classic Sidecar, using Merlet Brothers Blend cognac and Merlet Trois Citrus triple sec, plus a second cocktail using Merlet liqueurs.

15ml Fresh lemon juice
10ml Merlet Trois Citrus triple sec
10ml Theophile Champagne Syrup

Shaken, served straight up in a coupe, garnished with sweet pickled pear and lemon peel
