Walkabout officially launches search for more sites

Walkabout Newquay

Bar operator Intertain has officially launched a search for new venues for its Walkabout concept with the publication of a brochure for property agents, owners and developers.

The comprehensive Property Requirements brochure sets out its criteria for additional sites in prime locations across the UK, preferably with an existing late licence.

Chief executive John Leslie said: “While we’ll consider shell units and existing retail space with conversion opportunities, we’re ideally looking for existing bars, pubs and clubs.”

It follows a restructuring of Intertain’s main debt facilities, including the granting of new long-term funding arrangements, enabling the business to restart a major investment and expansion programme.

It is set to open its first new Walkabout in six years after the acquisition and refurbishment of former bar and club Bedrock in West Street, Brighton, which launches on May 21. Last month, it unveiled a new look for its bar in Newquay, Cornwall (pictured).

Dating back to 1994, Walkabout has been undergoing a transformation since 2013, moving from its 1990s “Outback” roots, towards a “contemporary, vibrant and aspirational” venue reflecting modern Australia.

With a broader demographic appeal, it now attracts a more discerning customer and has seen a 20% increase in female clientele. According to recent research, Walkabout is now perceived as a “cool”, “modern” and “authentic” venue to be seen in.

John said: “This is a tremendously exciting time for Walkabout. The evolution of the brand has resulted in Walkabout being seen as an invigorated, sustainable and valuable asset to UK high streets.”
