West Indies producers celebrate rum growth in UK

WIRSPA_Decade_of_Rum-2Golden and spiced rums continue to grow sales in the UK alongside a new programme of initiatives by the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers’ Association (WIRSPA).

In a new market report, using data from International Wine & Spirit Research and other sources, WIRSPA highlighted that rum grew 24% in the UK in the 10 years to 2012 and that golden rum was up 87%.

Spiced rums now represent over 20% of the UK market and have overtaken golden rum. The report also linked rum to a 10% growth in cocktails in the UK in 2013.

Last year, WIRSPA launched a new campaign for its “Authentic Caribbean Rum” (ACR) marque – a quality mark for rums made in 15 Caribbean countries (pictured).

A training programme to educate bar staff and other trade professionals is being delivered by an international panel including mixologist Amit Sood, head of professional training at UK training and events company Shaker.

The report can be downloaded at www.acr-rum.com.
