Wild Turkey releases barrel-proof bourbon in UK

Wild Turkey Rare Breed boubon

Wild Turkey’s Rare Breed – the number-one barrel-proof bourbon in the US – has been released in the UK.

It is bottled at barrel proof of 56.4% ABV, giving an extra edge to the bourbon’s rich and silky character with sweet and spicy notes and a long, dried fruit finish.

It is made with six-year-old whiskeys to provide a lively kick, with eight-year-olds to offer a smooth heart and 12-year-olds to deliver a rich depth.

The bourbon has been crafted by Wild Turkey’s master distiller Jimmy Russell. His son and fellow master distiller, Eddie Russell, said: “We’ve always liked to age our bourbons for longer than many other distillers and when it’s tried like this without water, you can really see why this makes sense.

“The Wild Turkey peppery, spicy characteristics burst out, but they’re sweetly rounded from the years of maturation in brand new oak barrels. Hell, it’s so smooth Jimmy keeps his in the freezer so he can serve it chilled without ice diluting it.”

Rare Breed has already collected a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco Spirits Competition earlier this year. With a recommended price in retail of £47.95, the stocky 700ml bottle comes with a cork stopper.

Tasting notes from Wild Turkey
Colour: Bright amber.
Nose: Dense aromas of roasted whole nots, peppercorns, banana custard pie and burnt sugar with a round silky medium-full body.
Taste: Tongue-warming polished wood, lemongrass, slate and white pepper finish. With a little water added, it rounds out to a long, lingering finish with dried fruits.
