Winner in Luxardo Maraschino challenge

Elliot Ball of Shaker & Company bar near Euston, London, has won the 2012 Luxardo Masters of Maraschino competition.

His cocktail, Torreglian Accord, combined Luxardo Maraschino with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Rémy Martin VSOP cognac, housemade lemon-grapefruit cordial and Grande Elixir de la Chartreuse.

Elliot said his recipe (below) brought together “the beautiful complexities in the dark cherry and almond aromas, both of which I enjoy in Luxardo Maraschino. With the addition of the intense Chartreuse Elixir, the result is an accidental blend of three of my favourites, the Sazerac, Last Word and Gimlet – all of which do credit to this superb Maraschino.”

His prize is a visit to the home of Luxardo near Venice, hosted by Matteo Luxardo and the Luxardo family, and a rare vintage 1950s bottle of Luxardo Maraschino.

The runner-up was Daniel O’Reilly of Havanas in Chester, while third prize went to Pie Panah of Little House, Mayfair in London.

The competition was held at Boutique Bar Show in London last week, organised by Luxardo’s UK distributor Cellar Trends with the UK Bartenders Guild (UKBG) and BarLife UK.

The final took place at the Boutique Bar Show in London in September. About 60 entries were shortlisted to 12 finalists. For the first year, a second competition, the Scottish Masters of Maraschino, will take place on October 23 at Boutique Bar Show in Glasgow.
