Woodford Reserve creates bespoke cocktail syrup for bartenders

Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned Cocktail Syrup

Woodford Reserve bourbon is launching its Old Fashioned Cocktail Syrup, developed in collaboration with UK bartenders, across the on-trade.

The Old Fashioned cocktail is often perceived as complex and time-consuming to perfect. To challenge this view, Woodford Reserve has created a syrup that recreates the integrated flavour of the core ingredients of the classic serve – bitters, sugar and orange essence.

Often heralded as the ‘bartender’s bourbon’, Woodford Reserve wanted to develop its cocktail syrup collectively with the trade.

From a Q&A through to a tasting workshop, with a cross-section of bartenders from volume to prestige accounts, the brand was able to understand what bartenders wanted from a syrup, and why.

Using bitters, sugars and botanical extracts, the resulting recipe is said to complement the signature notes of Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select – rich fruits, caramel, spices and vanilla.

Ultimately, the syrup has been designed to allow bartenders to create the classic Old Fashioned cocktail easily, with consistency.

Giorgio Bargiani, senior bartender at The Connaught Bar, said: “It has been inspiring to see such a respected brand wanting to work so closely with bartenders for this type of project. It was fantastic to share my insights on what my customers want from a cocktail such as the Old Fashioned.”

Emily Richardson, head of super premium brands at Brown Forman, added: “Woodford Reserve has always sought to create a perfectly balanced liquid and the Old Fashioned Syrup was no different.

“Woodford Reserve is comprised of more than 200 detectable flavour notes, from bold grain and wood, to sweet aromatics, spice, fruit and floral notes, so it was important to identify key profiles to complement this.

“The final liquid is the perfect reflection of the quality and craftsmanship of Woodford Reserve and we look forward to the reception from the UK trade.”

For the perfect serve, combine 50ml of Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select Bourbon with 10ml of Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned Cocktail Syrup, stir with ice for ten seconds and garnish with an orange zest.

Available as part of an ongoing offer from wholesalers, including Carlsberg, Amathus, Coors and Hills Prospect, bartenders will receive a complimentary 500ml bottle of the Old Fashioned Cocktail Syrup when purchasing Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select.
