Yorkshire revealed as UK’s biggest gin consumer after London

Yorkshire has been identified as the second biggest contributor to the UK’s rising sales in premium gin, according to figures for the on-trade.

While a quarter of all gin drinking is in London, research by CGA Strategy found that Yorkshire was a close second, selling over 64,188 more litres in the on-trade alone compared to last year’s figures.

The data, for the year for April, have been pulled together by the North Yorkshire producers of Slingsby Gin which was launched last year.

The research by CGA also showed that younger people are most likely to pay more for a premium spirit than the older generations. This growing, young market is likely to help sustain the current boom in craft and premium spirits, according to Slingsby Gin.

Marcus Black, co-owner and joint managing director of Slingsby Gin, commented: “Long gone has the stigma of ‘mother’s ruin’ and so too has the standardised ice and a slice. With such an array of botanicals and garnishes to choose from, gin-making is an art, and we’re able to tell a story through the spirit.

“With so much history behind it, it comes as no surprise that Yorkshire is top when it comes to the premium gin renaissance. Yorkshire folk are, quite frankly, taking to gin like nowhere else and we are continually having customers coming through the door who have excellent and building gin knowledge. We love chatting to customers from across the nation about our Yorkshire roots.”

Victoria Fletcher, hotel manager at gin champion The New Ellington in Leeds, said: “We’ve certainly seen an increase in gin connoisseurs experimenting with our bartenders on variety and taste. We now stock over 150 gins in our gin garden, including Yorkshire favourites Slingsby, Mason’s and Whittaker’s, each with their own garnish.”

William Grant & Sons UK’s latest Market Report, also using CGA figures, showed that sales of premium gin grew nationally by 58.6% by value in the year to April. Slingsby Gin is one of 93 new brands listed over the past two years.

Within its first year, Slingsby has sold nearly 15,000 bottles and has been selected as one of only three gins at Michelin-starred restaurant, L’Enclume in Cumbria. The brand has its own retail store and gin experience, the Spirit of Harrogate, two doors down from the famous Betty’s tea room in Harrogate.
