Bartenders to compete creating cocktails with Turkey’s raki

Bartenders are set to show off their skills in a competition to find the best cocktail using Turkey’s national spirit, raki.

Competitors have been selected from bars throughout London to take part in the event at Yosma, the Turkish restaurant in Baker Street, on September 26.

The prize includes £2,000 and a trip to Istanbul, courtesy of leading brand Yeni Raki. The winning cocktail will also be featured on the Yosma menu for one year alongside Yosma’s own list of signature raki drinks.

The competitors will be:

  • Juris Kēninš of The American Bar at The Savoy
  • Jon Rivera, bar manager at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen
  • Daniele Rubegni of Mr Fogg’s
  • Radek Różycki of The Cocktail Trading Company
  • Pierre-Marie Bisson, general manager of Milk & Honey
  • Marc Boltman of Blanchette
  • Federico Pes of Brasserie Zédel.

They will be judged by a panel of including bartender Matt Whiley, founder of London bar Scout, with Galip Yorgancıoğlu, CEO of Yeni Raki, and Yosma’s executive head chef Hus Vedat and the restaurant’s founder, Levent Büyükuğur.

Held in Yosma’s bar, it will offer guests the chance to sample all of the bartenders’ cocktails alongside an array of mezze plates created by Hus Vedat.

Hus said: “Back in Istanbul, a glass of raki is how I start any good dinner with friends, but it isn’t as well recognised in London as it deserves to be.

“We want to get people tasting and talking about raki, and having so many creative talents put their stamp on the spirit is the perfect way to put it on the map. We can’t wait to see what the guys are going to come up with.”
